Salinas, CA – A Monterey County sheriff’s deputy was shot on Wednesday morning as he was serving papers at a residence in Salinas.
The incident occurred just before 9 a.m. on May 31 when the deputy went to an apartment located in the area of East Market and Sun Street, KSBW reported.
Witnesses who heard the incident reporting having heard multiple gunshots.
Additional law enforcement officers responded to the scene at the report of gunfire, but by then, the suspect had barricaded himself inside his residence, KSBW reported.
Deputies evacuated the wounded deputy from the scene.
Monterey County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Nick Pasculli confirmed that a sheriff’s deputy from their department had been shot.
The wounded hero was transported to the hospital for treatment of his wounds, KSBW reported.
Officials have not yet released any details on the wounded deputy’s medical condition other than to say that he was still alive.
MCSO also hasn’t publicly identified the deputy who was shot.
Law enforcement officers have shut down streets in the area and residents are being asked not to return to their homes nearby until the all-clear signal has been given, KSBW reported.
Multiple other law enforcement agencies, including state and federal officers, were responding to the scene to assist local police.
