Actress Julia Roberts, an outspoken supporter of liberal causes, recently encouraged women across the U.S. to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. According to The Blast, Roberts has been “publicly campaigning” for Harris, urging women to stand behind her in the upcoming election. However, the question remains: what do women truly gain from casting their vote for Harris?
Julia Roberts is widely recognized for her roles in major films, including the 1991 thriller Sleeping with the Enemy. Interestingly, the title of this film could be seen as reflective of the controversies surrounding Harris’s policy choices and personal associations that some believe could negatively impact women.
For example, Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, has a troubling past with regard to women, raising questions about her judgment in personal matters. On October 24, Daily Mail published a report featuring Emhoff’s former girlfriend—referred to as “Jane” to protect her identity—who recounted her alleged experiences of abuse by Emhoff. Jane shared that Emhoff had previously divorced with two children when they dated in 2012. Early in their relationship, he reportedly admitted to an affair with his daughter’s nanny, who later accused him of abusive behavior.
Jane revealed that Emhoff told her he had settled with the nanny for around $80,000 and required her to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) after she claimed he was responsible for the loss of her pregnancy. Additionally, Los Angeles police records indicate that officers responded to an emergency call at the nanny’s home in June 2009, though specific details of the incident remain confidential.
The Daily Mail article also recounts Jane’s experience during a trip with Emhoff to France for the amfAR gala near the Cannes Film Festival. She alleged that, after the event, Emhoff’s demeanor changed unexpectedly as he slapped her, leaving her shocked and hurt. “In that moment, his mask had dropped and I saw his dark side,” she recalled.
Further, Jane noted Emhoff’s discomforting behavior, recalling how he photographed her in a bikini without her consent, which left her feeling objectified. Moreover, Daily Mail sources disclosed that former colleagues of Emhoff from his law firm Venable described him as “misogynistic” and “inappropriate,” with some claiming he boasted about putting women “in their place.”
These accusations surrounding Emhoff’s conduct raise valid concerns about Kamala Harris’s alignment with women’s rights, particularly in her pursuit of the female vote. Jane admitted she wondered if Harris, then serving as California’s Attorney General, was aware of Emhoff’s alleged history when they began dating.
Interestingly, Jane and her husband are both registered Democrats who contributed financially to Biden’s campaigns and voted for him in 2020. This adds context to Jane’s statements, undercutting any assumption that her account might be politically motivated.
However, Emhoff’s past isn’t the only factor casting doubt on Harris’s appeal to female voters. As a senator, Harris supported the Minnesota Freedom Fund, an organization that posted bail for rioters arrested during protests following George Floyd’s death. The fund helped release De’Seanna Williams, a violent criminal convicted of shooting and robbing an elderly woman in Minneapolis. Halima Farah, the victim, criticized Harris’s involvement, questioning her “judgment and priorities” in her role as a public official.
Furthermore, Harris’s policies as the Biden administration’s border czar have raised alarms regarding public safety, especially for women. With the increase in unvetted migrants entering the country, reports of crimes involving undocumented individuals have surfaced. In a particularly harrowing case, a young woman from Georgia, Laken Riley, was assaulted and killed by an undocumented Venezuelan migrant, Jose Ibarra, sparking widespread outrage. This tragic incident has been cited as an example of the potential risks associated with current immigration policies, which are seen by some as too lenient.
These incidents underscore the skepticism surrounding Harris’s track record on issues that impact women’s safety and well-being. While Julia Roberts may be championing Harris as a female leader, it’s worth questioning whether Harris’s decisions and associations truly align with the interests of women across the nation.
I would love to ask a liberal on what basis would you vote for Harris?
