Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) has been implicated in a scheme to allegedly route $192,300 in campaign funds to her daughter under the aegis of her 2022 re-election campaign.
Fox News has reported, that Karen Waters received over $1.2 million by running “slate mailers” for her mother’s campaign. According to Fox, she benefited from her mother’s campaign through outside campaigns paying Maxine Water’s campaign to appear on slate mailers also known as endorsement mailers alongside her. These mailings were then sent to her voters in the greater Los Angeles area.
While the money-making venture is unusual for federal-level campaigns, it is reportedly common in California’s lower-level races as a method to back-channel campaign funds from other candidates.
According to records from the Federal Election Commission cited by Fox, the 84-year-old congresswoman was given approval by the FEC to run the scheme in late 2004. Over the subsequent nineteen years, her daughter has raked in over $1.2 million in payments billable to her mother’s political campaigns. The elder Waters’ campaign funds also benefited, modestly from smaller local candidates but rather handsomely from state-wide gubernatorial, executive branch, and legislative candidates.
Fox News reported that even now-Vice President Kamala Harris availed herself of Waters’ local clout with LA Democrats.
It is curious that although Mrs. Waters and her daughter have benefitted so thoroughly and richly from capitalism, she seems to have, as reported earlier this week, a major issue denouncing socialism.
When asked during a hearing Tuesday by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) if she still supported her 2008 statement, “this liberal will be all about … this liberal will be all about socializing … would be about basically taking over the government and the government running all of your companies.” Waters responded, “I’m not a socialist, I’m a capitalist, and I commit to you that I am here to save Social Security, to save Medicare, to save seniors and Veterans, and for some of you who have adopted certain kinds of ways that you support what you now claim is socialism, I’m here to say to you, come on,” according to The Daily Caller.
Roy pressed on, asking if she still stood by those comments regarding a federal government takeover of U.S. oil companies.
