On Tuesday evening, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy went off on reporters over a question of whether or not Adam Schiff would be allowed to serve on Intelligence committees in the future.
“What did Adam Schiff do as the chairman of the Intel committee? What Adam Schiff did is use his power at the chairman and lied to the American public,” McCarthy began.
“When Devon Nunes put out a memo, he [Schiff] said it was false. When we had a laptop, he [Schiff] used it before the election to be politics and say that it was false, he said it was the Russians when he knew different,” he said.
“When a whistleblower came forward he said he did not know the individual even though his staff had met with him and set it up. So no, he does not have a right to sit on that, but I will not be like Democrats and play politics with these…where they remove Republicans from committees and all committee’s. So yes, he can serve on a committee, but he will not serve on intel because it goes to the national security of America and I will always put them first,” he concluded.
Below is a formal rejection of Swalwell and Schiff for the House Intelligence Committee.
“I have rejected the appointments of Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell for the House Intelligence Committee,” McCarthy tweeted.
“I am committed to returning the House Intel Committee to one of genuine honesty and credibility that regains the trust of the American people.”
Many conservatives were wary of McCarthy becoming the Speaker of the House. They were afraid that he would play by the same establishment rules as those before him.
Last week, McCarthy helped to end the practice of proxy voting.
“No more proxy voting,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., announced Thursday.
“Effective immediately, Members of Congress have to show up to work if they want their vote to count.”
Proxy voting was started by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi to allow Congress to operate under COVID-19 pandemic protocols.
Of course, proxy voting opened to door to abusing the new allowance. Many lawmakers used proxy voting to attend campaign events and other functions while citing health concerns for voting in person.
Rep. Andy Biggs, who helped lead the opposition to McCarthy made a statement after McCarthy was elected Speaker.
“Earlier this morning, Kevin McCarthy was elected as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives for the 118th Congress. It is important that he be successful and I wish him success in fighting the Democrats and advancing the Republican agenda,” Biggs said.
He added: “He has shown a new willingness to empower the people of the country and I will be watching closely to see if he stays true to his word.”
