“Happy Days” actor Scott Baio announced on Wednesday that he is leaving California. He said that the state’s homelessness crisis is one of the reasons.
Baio is a long-time Los Angeles resident. He played Chachi on the hit 1970s show “Happy Days”. He said that California is “not a safe place anymore” and he pointed to the soft-on-crime policies.
“After 45 years, I’m making my way to finally ‘exit stage right’ from California,” the retired actor said.
“[Homelessness] brings down property value. Also no consequences for crime that is rampant, making things higher in price and it’s just not a safe place anymore. #ImFree,” Baio wrote.
Baio said that his fellow Californians probably wouldn’t “miss his ‘right wing’ views.”
A Twitter user said that Scott would not be missed, so he shot back, “Maybe not, but they’ll certainly miss the high taxes I pay!”
Baio said he’s “always been a conservative voter.”

According to Realtor.com, Baio listed his Woodland Hills home for $3.85 million in April. His 6,300-square-foot property includes five bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, and a home theater.
Baio is not the first celebrity to leave California. Matthew McConaughey, Joe Rogan, Mark Wahlberg, and others have packed their bags citing similar concerns.
Between April 2020 and July 2022, around 500,000 people moved out of California.
A survey published in March found that half of the American homeless population lives in California: roughly 115,500 people out of 233,800.
The overall homeless population in the state increased by about 6% since 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Mark Wahlberg moved his family from California to Nevada, last year.
“I want to be able to work from home. I moved to California many years ago to pursue acting, and I’ve only made a couple of movies in the entire time that I was there,” he said.
“So, to be able to give my kids a better life and follow and pursue their dreams, whether it be my daughter as an equestrian, my son as a basketball player, my younger son as a golfer, this made a lot more sense for us.”
Relationship expert and psychologist Carmen Harra shared with Fox News why some stars are choosing to raise their families elsewhere.
“Some celebrities have chosen to move out of Hollywood to raise their families because they want an overall healthier environment for their children,” Harra told Fox News Digital.
She continued, “Hollywood is a place that’s full of opportunity, especially if you’re an actor or artist, but it isn’t necessarily the healthiest atmosphere for a family.”
“In terms of raising children, Hollywood puts a lot of pressure on kids: children might ‘grow up too quickly’ because of the fast-paced lifestyle, or they might be influenced to take part in unhealthy activities, like drinking, smoking or doing drugs.”
“Hollywood is a glamorous city, but it’s also superficial, vain and full of temptations—not the ideal environment in which to thrive as a tight-knit and whole family. Many celebrities have realized this and have decided to leave the city behind for the sake of their family’s well-being,” she concluded.
