The Florida chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has called for a travel advisory to the Sunshine State, claiming that the Republican-dominated Florida legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis have created an atmosphere that is hostile to black people who are having their rights rolled back.
During the state conference in Orlando over the weekend, members voted unanimously to ask the national headquarters for the longtime civil rights organization to issue the advisory for black people who want to enjoy Florida’s sunny weather, theme parks and beaches, urging them to reconsider any plans that they may have to visit the state as a protest against laws that they do not agree with and DeSantis’ ban of a “woke” African-American history course that promoted leftist ideological concepts such as queer theory which had nothing to do with the black experience.
“We would issue this to anyone who is thinking of coming to Florida, thinking of sending their children to school — anyone planning to breathe in Florida,” the NAACP Florida State Conference chair of legislative affairs said. “We want people to be ‘woke.’”
“We are an organization that protects people’s civil rights, and this is a first step to doing that,” said Hillsborough County NAACP President Yvette Lewis. “People are seeing what’s happening in Florida. They’re paying attention, and I hope that help is coming.”
“We will issue that out to everyone nationwide so they will know what’s going on here and how our people are being treated in the state of Florida,” Lewis said. “And we’re gonna let them make their decision on if they want to come to the state of Florida.”
“It’s time to speak up and say something because they are rolling us back,” she told WTSP. “And if you don’t know your history it’s bound to repeat itself.”
“When slaves tried to educate themselves, they were beaten. When they tried to learn to read, they were killed for having books,” Lewis said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “I have to relate this back because this is how I feel.”
Her remarks appear to refer to the mythical banning of books by DeSantis, another hoax concocted by the left-wing media smear machine to portray the governor as the latest iteration of the “new Hitler” and to poison the well before he enters the 2024 race for the White House.
Lewis may not have had the opportunity to research the so-called book ban which was debunked by DeSantis when he shared videos of the vile pornographic content that had found its way into school libraries, including graphic depictions of masturbation and gay sex.
“Exposing the ‘book ban’ hoax is important because it reveals that some are attempting to use our schools for indoctrination,” DeSantis said in a statement. “In Florida, pornographic and inappropriate materials that have been snuck into our classrooms and libraries to sexualize our students violate our state education standards. Florida is the education state and that means providing students with a quality education free from sexualization and harmful materials that are not age appropriate.”
“We can’t go back,” Lewis said. “We’ve come too far to turn around.”
