Not too long ago, I argued that Liz Cheney, the Republican defector, had no political future. I believed that once her role as a useful tool for the Democratic Party ended, she would find herself without support from either side. I have to admit I was mistaken. Cheney has now positioned herself as an essential figure for Team Harris.
It’s not just about her voting “yes” on Trump’s impeachment; that alone might have been overlooked. But then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s decision to remove Cheney from her leadership role turned her into a “woman scorned.” This fueled her shift towards dissent, which became glaring when she joined Speaker Pelosi’s January 6th Committee. This move not only cost her a seat in Congress but also solidified her philosophical departure from the Republican Party.
The real issue with Cheney isn’t her impeachment vote or her disdain for Trump. What’s truly telling is her transformation from a staunch conservative to a radical Democrat ally.
While Cheney still identifies as a Republican and claims to uphold conservative ideals, her actions speak otherwise. Her deep personal dislike for Trump has expanded into a broader rejection of the Republican Party and its principles. She now campaigns and raises funds solely for Democratic candidates, effectively turning her back on the conservative values she once championed.
Such a drastic shift can only come from someone whose ambitions outweigh their principles. Instead of being a temporary pawn, Cheney has proven herself to be a long-term political asset for the left. Her unwavering support for the Democratic Party reflects a betrayal of her previous conservative stances.
Given her complete ideological overhaul, Cheney has made herself indispensable to Harris. It’s clear that Cheney’s aim is to secure a significant role in a future Harris administration. As she stood beside Vice President Harris during an event in Ripon, Wisconsin—the birthplace of the Republican Party—her aspirations were on full display.
Cheney is clearly angling for a key position in Harris’s Cabinet. The Vice President has even suggested she would include a Republican in her administration, and it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Cheney in that role. Certainly, no true conservative Republican would fit the bill. Instead, it would have to be a figure like Cheney—an apostate who has distanced herself from her former party.
Cheney may claim to prioritize country over party, but in truth, she’s prioritizing herself over both.
And there you have it.
